Dusk was falling, told by the chirping of insects and the forest getting darker, cast in a wash of burnt oranges and reds. A large lupine figure, a stark black silhouette, stalked along a stream that cut through the woodlands, moving with the current to see where it would lead him. He had no specific destination in mind. Anywhere, as long as it led him forward.
He knew not where his journeys had taken him. A nameless valley far, far away from all he had left behind, full of possibilities. By the smell of things, the place was populated. Other wolves have passed through here recently and it was possible a pack or two lived nearby. The land was abundant, teeming with game, and it was pretty enough.
Something to be cautious of. Most packs, he’s found, do not take very kindly to travelers, unless they are looking for a king to serve. Perhaps it is in his best interest to scout things out and get a feel for the local politics. Knowledge is power.
He pressed onwards, squinting against golden rays of light, only for the ground to vanish when he took his next step. Quickly, he lurched back, looking down at a sharp and sudden drop. Carefully, he stepped closer to the cliff, his toes almost hanging off the edge. Silver eyes scanned the land ahead, the forest beyond seemingly endless but nothing ever truly was. Looking to his left and then to his right, there was not an obvious way around, but surely if he picked a direction and started walking, a new way forward would reveal itself.
But when he peered over the edge, he found himself wondering how it would feel to fall.
